Q: How can I hook up my Zune MP3 player to my 2002 Ford Explorer?
I want to hook up my Microsoft Zune to my 2002 Ford Explorer without using a FM transmitter. How can I do this? I think I need an AUX cable and to somehow hook that up to the radio. Any suggestions? It is a factory stereo.

A: I found the best thing since sliced bread…http://www.crutchfield.com/S-9oDEWuNVIo6/cgi-bin/prodview.asp?i=142FMMOD01

It’s not wireless so there’s no chance for interference. It basically adds an AUX port to ANY radio.

It feeds your audio signal from a headphone jack ( or RCA cables) by FM modulation, directly into the antenna input on your radio bypassing the antenna when on, allowing the radio to work as normal when off.

This IS the answer. Totally versatile.

Q: 2002 ford explorer sport trac keypad code.?
i baught a use 2002 ford explorer sport trac without the keypad code, i would like to locate the factory code which i understand its somewhere on the vehicle. i look at the jack compartment and some other places with no luck, can someone tell me where else to look, and where is the computer box?

A: A Ford dealer can do that for you by hooking up their diagnostic scan tool. They can even reset the code to your own preference if you wish. I have worked in Ford dealerships. Originally there is a card that tells you what the key pad code is but it most often gets lost when traded in. If you looked in the glove box and owners manual bag then it is probably gone.

Q: what is the best oil to use for an 2002 ford explorer?
which type of oil is the best to use for an 2002 Explorer with 73,000 mile

A: that should use the 5W30 oil. the 4.0 ,4.6 and 5.4 engines have a hydralically controlled timing chain chain tensioner in them. they really dont like the heavier weight oil. It is important to make sure you keep the proper weight and maintain proper oil change intervals on these type of engines. it can use the 10W30 but ford reccommends you use the 5W30. hope this helps.

Q: what type of gear oil does my 2002 ford explorer use?

A: You should use 75w-90 on the front axle and 75w-140 on the rear axle if you have had any “whine/hum during acceleration, deceleration, and/or cruise.” If not, just use 75w-90 on both.

“2002-2005 Ford Explorers
2002-2005 Mercury Mountaineers
NOTE: When servicing the rear axle on these vehicles, replace the 75w-90 gear oil with 75W-140.”

Q: I want to use E85 fuel in my 2002 Ford explorer xlt, 6 cyl. any problems with that?
At the ford dealership they said i couldn’t,. i was just assuming that they didn’t want to be liable if it screwed up my engine. It is out of warranty.

A: So you want to run E85? Your vehicle will run on it, but as said before, there will be performance issues. For a proper conversion you will need to do the following:
1) Install a non-metalic fuel tank
2) Install teflon lined fuel lines
3) Replace all fuel system o-rings with neoprene
4) Install a t504 stainless steel fuel rail
5) have the PCM reflashed to accomodate for the higher oxygenation of the E85 fuel.

The corrosive attributes of this fuel have been blown slightly out of proportion, but fuel system errosion will occur if the vehicle is run constantly on this fuel without proper equipment being installed on the vehicle. On a properly equipped 2003 Explorer V6; proving ground tests show that the vehicle exhibited a 3% decrease in fuel economy and a 10% increase in horsepower and torque. This is because the PCM on this vehicle is tuned to accomodate the higher oxygenation of the fuel. E-85 has an octane equivalency of around 110 octane depending on the base quality of the gasoline used to denature the ethanol. Because the fuel has a high octane equivalency, we were able to alter the fuel map and cam and ignition timing to better utilize this fuel characteristic.
You cannot expect to get these results from a vehicle that is not equipped to burn E85. The performance will be hampered, and the fuel economy will plumet.

E85 can be run in vehicles using a carburetor easier than fuel injection due to the absence of a PCM and the benefit of manual tuning of the engine. The only issue with the carburated engines would be the errosion of the fuel system which would be slight.

Hope this helps explain the technical reasoning behind the use of this fuel.

Q: what oil would you use in 2002 ford explorer? 118,000 miles?
castrol gtx or motor craft oil and why, thanks

A: The kind of oil you run is not nearly as important as making sure that it gets changed regularly and that you use a good quality filter. That being said. In my fords I use Motorcraft oil and either a Motorcraft or a Wix filter(never Fram, if you want to know why i’d be happy to explain, but that’s not your question so I digress). Reason being is pretty simple, it is inexpensive for a fully certified semi-synthetic oil, and it is good enough for ford to warranty in their new cars. Don’t get me wrong GTX is GREAT oil and I would run it in a heart beat, I just don’t think that you can beat Motorcraft for the money.

Also generally don’t bother with “High Mileage” oils, they are a great way to drain your wallet and don’t do a whole bunch of other good.

Sorry for the long winded answer, take care.

Q: I need a complete used left door for my Ford Explorer Sport 2002?
If you have one for sale or if you know where I can find a used cheapest one in Dallas, TX.. let me know please

A: Try the salvage yards. Sometimes vehicles that are wrecked have some very good parts remaining. They may even have one in the exact color you need. Look up the salvage yards in your area and start calling. See where you can get it cheapest. Good luck.

Q: How can I be sure that the 4×4 on my Explorer is working?
I have a 2002 used Ford Explorer. I bought it about a year ago. It has a 4×4 button on it and the light goes on. How can I know for sure that it works, apart from going and trying it out in the snow! We want to drive up to Oregon and need to know just in case there is snow in the pass.

A: jack up the front and rear tires. start it. put it in 4wd. Put it in gear. If the front and rear are spinning, it is working

Pull into a dirt lot. Put it in 4wd. Have a friend stand outside and watch the front tires as you floor it. If the front tires spin (not just roll forward) in the dirt, 4wd is working.

Q: Is there a difference between the bed of a 2003 and 2002 Ford Explorer Sport Trac?
I turned in an insurance claim on my 2003 Ford Sport Trac. They decided to put a used bed to replace mine. But something seems different about this bed. How can someone tell the difference. (Bottom line is I really dont care as long as it didnt cause any problems, but when I fill up my gas tank now the gas spurts out every few gallons. The overflow hose looks unattached but there is nowhere to attach it)

A: no the sport trac just got updated in ‘07.insurance companies in order to save money use recycled parts more than new parts in today times.it may be that the mechanic doing the work didn’t attach the overflow hose.call the insurance company and have them make you another appointment to make things right on your truck

Q: 2002 Ford Explorer transmissions 5r55s and 5r55w?
2002 Ford Explorer 4.0 SOHC

Can i use a 5R55W transmission out of the exact same truck (2002 Ford Explorer 4.0 SOHC) in place of the 5R55S thats in it now?

A: You would have to first make sure it would bolt up to the motor, which I believe off the top of my head will. Then after you installed it you would have to have the pcm recalibrated since it is a different trans.

Q: 2002 Ford Explorer – How do I know if my antenna wire is cut?
My radio gets terrible, terrible, awful reception and I’m in a fairly large metro market. It used to work fine.

There is a little black squarish thing that sticks out a little bit from the roof line near the windshield, just above where oil change and tire places put their little reminder stickers. This is attached to a wire which… is attached to nothing!

Is that, by any chance, the wire that is supposed to connect my antenna to my radio? If so, do you know how in the world I would get it connected again? Would I have to have someone remove the whole ceiling of my car?
Antenna is not integrated into windshield so far as I know. If that wire across the top isn’t antenna, any idea what it might be?

Also – I have taken the radio out and checked the connections in the back. Visually, everything looks fine.

A: That sounds like the optional cell phone antenna.
Sometimes removing the radio, pulling out he antenna and then putting it back in helps.
I have 96 Ford radio and something inside it just blew and now I don’t get FM only AM. So maybe the factory radio just crapped out.

Q: Can one use the tire size on Ford Expolorer 2002 – Eddie Bauer on Ford Explorer 2002 XLS?
I have just bought an explorer but tire specifications are not in the manual that followed it. I usually like having big tires and through my reading the Eddie Bauer has a slightly bigger tire.

A: Yes, you can fit bigger tiers on it if they fit on the Eddie Bauer version, the difference from that one and the XLS is the trim level, they had the same body and same suspension, so the tires and wheels will work from one to the other. Your recomended tire size is 235/70-16

Q: Can I take a SUV I bought used to the Ford dealer to get a recalled part fixed?
I bought a 2002 Ford Explorer in August of 2006. The latch on the back window just broke, causing the window to almost fall off and break. I got it back in temporarily, but it needs to be replaced. I see it was a recalled part back in 2003, and at that time you could take it back to Ford and they would replace it for free.
Can I still take it back to Ford to be replaced, even though I bought it used? Thanks!

A: Yes. You can take a vehicle back for a recalled part at any time.

Q: Best way to add an aux. input into my 2002 ford explorer for my Zune?
What would be the best way to add an auxilary input into my 2002 ford explorer so that I can use my Zune mp3 player without using an fm-tuner

A: I would recommend just replacing your stock stereo with an aftermarket unit. You can get a car stereo with an aux input that’ll also play MP3/WMA files for under $100 these days. Order from crutchfield.com and they’ll include the mounting kit and adapter cable along with instructions, it’s not a difficult swap at all.
