2002 Ford Explorer

It does not have any holes for a removal key..

Thanks
I cannot find the four clips that take the panel off where are they?

A: You cannot see the retaining clips, they are made into the back of the plastic trim panel. You’ll need to insert something thin along the side of the panel and pry it off. Take care not to damage the dash.

You can see the instructions here.

Q: How do you remove the rear subwoofer in a 2002 ford explorer sport?
The subwoofer in the back of my 2002 ford explorer sport broke and I cannot get it out of the hole it is in. I removed all of the screws and tried prying it out with a hammer and still cannot get it out. Any ideas on how to remove it? Does it require any factory tools to get it out?

A: You’re missing one screw: it goes through the back of the subwoofer enclosure and into the center of the sub’s back plate. To remove the sub, you need to take off the entire rear side panel and pull the enclosure out so you can get to the back. Stupid design, eh?

Q: Is there an effective way to refit or convert a 2002 Ford Explorer for better mileage & lower gas consumption?
I have a 2002 Ford Explorer & a 1986 Mustang. They get about the same, pitiful mileage of about 14mpg. I can’t afford a new car/hybrid. Is there anyway to get better mileage out of either other than the basics…tire inflation, oil & filter replacements, etc. And…unfortunately, a bicycle won’t take me where I need to go. Are hydrogen or water conversion kits really effective & would either work for me? Thanks for any suggestions.

A: 14 in a 2002 Explorer? Must be a lot of city driving.

Step one would be a new fuel filter, air filter, and spark plug change if not done within last 30,000 miles or so and oil in last 5,000 miles as most neglect this and eats the fuel mileage hard.

make sure air pressure is at 35psi and be easy on the gas is about the only real proven fuel economy answers.

The water conversions still have the jury out on them.. some swear by them, some say it doesn’t work as claimed for the money spent to buy and install the system (as the water has to be metered just so or you can explode a engine)

And what I read is from certified techs… not the people selling these systems on the side

Q: How do I uninstall a 2002 Ford Explorer Radio?
How do I take out a stock 2002 Ford Explorer Radio? I have a new one to put in it’s a pioneer cd player.

You can purchase new harness for new radio comes completely colod coordinated you cant miss….Good luck.you may need to remove knobs first, and disc lighter when bezel is hanging.

Q: What does the 4X4 module for 2002 Ford Explorer look like?
My 2002 Ford Explorer started jerking when it hits 20-35 mph. and uphill. Have heard lots of suggestions, that it is the tire size, transmission, and possibly the 4X4 module. Tried to put the car into 4X4 high and the jerking stopped and it would not go into 4X4 low. Do not want to pay $800.-$1000. to be fixed until I can research about the module.

A: The module would not cause the jerking. The low function will not work unit the truck is in neutral and speed below 5 mph. The jerking could be engine, transmission, transfer case, rear end. Putting the truck in 4×4 could have changed the load on the engine. I would suggest getting the truck diagnosed by a shop. If it is an engine performance issue or misfires there should be evidence of it in the ECM. If it is a transfer case or transmission problem an examination of the fluid should give some indication if there is something wrong with them. It sounds like you have gotten a lot of info, but It is really hard to diagnose something like this without looking at it. Call around, some shops like Aamco and others will diagnose vehicles for free and give you an estimate for the needed repairs.

Q: Where is the transmission fluid cap located on my 2002 FORD Explorer?
I have a 2002 FORD Explorer and wanted to check the level of transmission fluid but have been unsuccessful about finding the cap. I took it to a mechanic and he can not find it either. Any idea where it is?

A: Which engine do you have, the 4.0L or 4.6L? I don’t believe that this vehicle has a closed crank case tranny, although it is possible. However, if you have the 4.0L V6 your Trans fluid dipstick will be your ‘cap’ located on the left hand side, below the coolant line. Sometimes it can be a pain to get to, but it is still possible. If you havre the 4.6L, I may be mistaken but I believe the dipstick tube will be located on the Right hand side. It would be a clearly marked yellow dipstick handle with “Mercon V” printed in black on it.
Remember, to get an accurate trans fluid reading, hot or cold you MUST check the level with the engine running.

Q: How much does it cost to replace a 2002 Ford Explorer Heater Core?
Any idea of the costs involved? This makes me so sad to be happening right around the holidays, but we’ll survive, I guess. Bummer though!
The car is a 2002 Ford Explorer. The heater has been acting up and the mechanic we are going to said it sounds like a heater core issue. Any idea how much this is going to cost our lil’ family?

Q: 2002 ford explorer vibration under light acceleration?
I have a 2002 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer with 4.0L SOHC V6. At highway speeds during light acceleration the car experiences a vibration that seems to be coming from underneath the floor. Usually the RPMs are very low when this happens. During heavier acceleration the problem is not felt. Any ideas what this could be?

A: check for recall….if it happen at 35 to 45 mpg then you have a problem on your trans .. usually they will add an additive to the oil after they changes it,,if worst ,,they will change the torge converter

Q: How can I hook up my Zune MP3 player to my 2002 Ford Explorer?
I want to hook up my Microsoft Zune to my 2002 Ford Explorer without using a FM transmitter. How can I do this? I think I need an AUX cable and to somehow hook that up to the radio. Any suggestions? It is a factory stereo.

A: I found the best thing since sliced bread…http://www.crutchfield.com/S-9oDEWuNVIo6/cgi-bin/prodview.asp?i=142FMMOD01

It’s not wireless so there’s no chance for interference. It basically adds an AUX port to ANY radio.

It feeds your audio signal from a headphone jack ( or RCA cables) by FM modulation, directly into the antenna input on your radio bypassing the antenna when on, allowing the radio to work as normal when off.

This IS the answer. Totally versatile.

Q: What’s The Biggest Size Rims I Can Put On A 2002 Ford Explorer?
Hi everyone. I wanted to know if anybody out there might know what the biggest size rims i could fit on a 2002 ford explorer? I want to put 24’s. Let me know if it’s possible. Thank you.

A: My hubby’s heard of 27 inch. If you do big rims, you have to upgrade the brakes.

Q: Should I buy a 2002 Ford Explorer XLT 4 Door with high mileage?
It is a 2002 Ford Explorer XLT 4 Door with 120,000 for $6,200. The price is kind of high but that can always be talked down. But I am worried about what problems I may have with getting a Ford Explorer with 120,000 miles.

A: Kinda high? Better do some checking. The link below is to Kelly Blue book and that vehicle with normal equipment and good condition sells privately for $4420. Even a dealer (retail price) should not exceed $6770 and that assumes the vehicle is just about perfect all around.

I used 4l V6 located in the Las Vegas market as a basis. You can check it out yourself, but that is WAY too much.

Q: Thinking about buying a 2002 Ford Explorer with 109000 miles, is this a good deal?
I’m considering buying a 2002 Explorer with 109000 miles on it, it is 4 wheel drive and has a third row seat, price asking is 5375, it seems to be in great condition, is this a good deal, how much longer is this car going to last, is it worth my purchase?

A: You should also consider that such a car may be expensive to insure. Check your insurance rates before buying one, for example here – carquotes.sinfree.net

Q: Where is a good website or place to buy a car stereo deck for a 2002 Ford Explorer that will fit?

Q: Why does my 2002 Ford Explorer jerk right when accelerating?
When accelerating in my 2002 Ford Explorer there is a fairly strong jerk which is sometimes followed by a fewer other jerks – they are generally a few that happen very quickly . Outside of that the vehicle runs pretty smoothly for an SUV. I am thinking Fuel System or Transmission – am I on the right track? What could the problem be and how much would that generally cost to fix? Thank you!

A: if you can feel it shifting back and forth in the transmission, then it may be the transmission its self doing some of this,it may be kicking in and out of over drive on it,or lock up mode may not be staying in like it should be,its also possible it has a slight miss fire in it,and that will cause a jerk in it when you accelerate it,what you need to do right now is try and narrow it down to a trans, problem or a running problem, and then go from there with it,right now it can be one of about 20 things that could cause this to happen, maybe you,ll be able to narrow it down some, good luck with it.
