Q: how much would it cost to fix breaks on ford explorer 2000?
I have 2000 ford explorer and the brakes are almost gone. Very hard to stop and makes grinding noise. Can someone tell me how much it would cost to fix it at the dealer?
Also the brake light (hand brake) is on. The car has 104000 miles.
A: Dealer? BIG BUCKS.
Any local legitimate shop can do the work for half the cost of the dealer. You will need pads for sure, Rotor either turned or replaced all after a complete inspection to solve light issue.
This is not something you want to drive around on till you get the chance. Damage has already occurred and will definitely get worse.
Most legitimate shops will do a complete inspection for free and they will quote a cost before work is done. Try several (three or more) local shops for price matching.

Q: 2000 Ford Explorer Brakes are squeaking and I need help with the diagnostics? How do I know if it’s the front?
I have roughly 100,000 miles on the car now (2000 Ford Explorer, American Spec) and I guess everything is going wrong now. I do have another question with regards to tires. I am unsure what to order or should I just let the mechanic take care of it. But then I am thinking what if he says the front and back both need replacing and they really don’t. What do I look for and what can I do?
THANKS!
A: It most likely is the front. Keep in mind, just because the brakes are squeaking does not mean there is something wrong with them. Squeaks can be caused by many things. It could be the friction material used. That vehicle is designed to have ceramic brake pads not semi metallic. One thing about ceramic pads, there are many different formulas. Use Pads from Ford or Akebono brand pads. The main caues of squeaks is vibration of the brake pad. So remember to lubricate all metal to metal contact points of the brake pad with high temp lube. (DO NOT LUBE FRICTION MATERIAL) Also make sure any and all hardware (spring slips, sleeves, slides etc) is in good shape. If the rotors are not smooth flat and clean, they should be machined and washed with soap and water after machining. As far as the tires. Look to see that you have at least 1/8″ of tread all the way across the tread and all the way around the tire.
Q: How do I get the front panel off my 2000 Ford Explorer to replace the speaker?
The speaker in the passenger door of my 2000 Ford Explorer xlt has blown. I can’t seem to find any way to get either the panel or the mesh grill over the speaker off.
A: The entire door panel comes off; you can’t just remove the mesh. Look for screws behind the door pull handle. There may also be a removable panel behind the door release lever, with a screw underneath.
If you’ve found and removed all the screws, the trick is that the door panel needs to be lifted straight up to remove it from the door. Don’t try prying it away or you’ll break the tabs.
Q: How do you replace the center console of a 2000 Ford Explorer XLT?
I just bought a 2000 Ford Explorer XLT and I want to know how to replace the center console. On the back of the console, it has a control center to control the radio and the air. Is it going to be hard to replace? Do you just unscrew it, or do you pull it out? Please help!
A: im not really sure on the 2000 explorer but i know with my 94 explorer when i take apart anything all i have to do is take out all the screws, you should be able to take some of the parts out (change holder and such), when you get to the electronic parts there shopuld be enough room to push the controls through. some of them have a clip that you can lift and it can come out as one. my only other advice would be to go to a part store and pick up a Haynes manual, they run about $15. hope this helps

Q: Is a 2000 Ford Explorer good for a first time driver?
I am 16 years old, almost 17 and i’ve been working and i’ve finally saved up enough money to buy a decent car. I looked around on craigs list and i found this awesome 2000 ford explorer for 3500. Is this a good car for me? I don’t drive too much, just when i can borrow my mom’s car. I plan on driving this car across the country when i graduate. so, is this a good choice?
A: Ford explorer is a good choice. They are safe and dependable.
A 3500 dollar truck will need some work before you drive out to the middle of Iowa. Usually a car this old it is time to replace struts, shocks and rubber bushings. Normallly around town these aren’t a big deal but i can make the car pull or tires wear funny. On long trips that can be uncomfortable to fight wht the wheel.
Dirve it. Check it out good. Make sure that the car is mechanically sound not just claned up real good to look nice. You want a good engine and transmission. Don’t be fooled by nice rims or stereo.
Once you get it you can get it ready for your trip little at a time. Replace belts, hoses, get some tires ect.
Q: I have a 2000 ford explorer i would like to know what size the biggest rims i can put on it?
I have a 2000 ford explorer i would like to know what size the biggest rims i can put on it?

MIGHT FIT IN 24 IF LUCKY
Q: should I feel coolant flowing through radiator upper hose on my 2000 ford Explorer?
I have a 2000 ford explorer and I just replaced my thermostat and thermostat housing but i don’t feel coolant flowing through the upper hose. Is that normal?
A: It’s perfectly normal not to feel coolant flow at any time. At first the coolant circulates through cooling passages inside the motor block and cylinder heads by means of the water pump. When the motor gets hot enough to open the thermostat the water-pump starts to push hot (thermostat heat value) through the engine and out to the the upper radiator hose. From there the hot water is cooled by the radiator and returns the the motor through the lower radiator hose. At that time you will feel heat in the top hose. That means coolant is circulating fully and normally through your entire motor.
However, the thermostat is a heat sensing valve and it constantly is opening and partially closing so that the coolant stays slightly above what ever is stamped on the thermostat. Thermostats provide engine efficiency and helps keep the motor oil within a given temperature to drive off moisture, gasoline that escapes past the piston rings and provides the correct temperature so that all moving parts expand slightly so that critical clearances (bearings, lifter bores, cylinder bores and valve guides) are within tolerance.
Q: I own a 2000 ford explorer xls, I started getting a brake pulsation?
I own a 2000 ford explorer xls, I started getting a brake pulsation and the pedal goes to floor when making right turn moving slow? Any ideas what would cause this?
A: pulsing is warped rotors, probably the front as they do most of the work. Have them profesionally turned (cut straight) or replace them with new.
Not sure about the brakes going to the floor, but I’d suspect worn pads. Possible bad master cylinder, but I’d start w/ pads, rotors, and some fresh brake fluid.
Q: What type of fuild goes in a 2000 Ford Explorer for the power steering?
Someone said transmission fluid but someone else says power steering fluid
2000 Ford Explorer xlt
v6 4.0
the owners manual says to use Mercon ATF
A: I had a ford F150 that was a 99 that required transmission fluid in the power steering pump. Check your owners manual or the cap on the power steering pump, both should tell you.
Mercon is Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF)…
Q: How do I remove map lights and cargo light on a 2000 Ford Explorer/Mercury Mountaineer?
I own a 2000 Mercury Mountaineer and I’m assuming it’s the same interior lighting wise as a 2000 Ford Explorer. I need to know how to remove the two map lights in the front. I took off the plastic lense cover and tried everything I could think of and couldn’t figure out how to remove the two map lights. Also in the very back I couldn’t figure out how to get the plastic cover off the rear cargo light.
I am simply replacing the bulbs with some brighter, better qaulity bulbs. I am not permantly removing the lights.
A: try a sawzall
Q: Where is the fuel pump reset switch on a 2000 Ford Explorer XLT?
I just replaced the battery in my 2000 Ford Explorer XLT and the car cranks but still doesn’t turn over. I don’t hear the whirring of the fuel pump when I turn the ignition to the ON position. I was thinking that maybe I have to reset the fuel pump switch but don’t know where it is and it isn’t in the owner’s manual. Would greatly appreciate any help. Thanks!
A: The inertia switch is located in the right side kick panel, right in front of the passenger front door. You should be able to reach over the plastic and feel it, as it should have a round button facing straight up.
Hope it helps…
