1998 Ford Explorer XLT automatic transmission is slipping going into third gear. Which years will still fit? I recall the 1997 and 1998 Explorer tranny is the same. What about Ford Ranger?
A: there should be a service tag on the side of trans. but i would be careful of switching between years of vehicles, they change the electronics from year to year usually and from vehicle to vehicle. best bet is to build the 1 you got.

A: i would have to say youre screwed i think your best bet would be to check in to mtx thunderforms or jl audio stealthboxes for replacement otherwise if you want to remain factory pull it out take it in to the dealership and have the model/part number searched good luck hope this helps

It’s in the factory installed spot in the rear quarter panel, and I took out all the screws and even ripped apart the entire speaker, but yet something is holding in on in the rear, and I can’t get to it. Has anybody else had this problem? Do I need to take apart the entire interior just to reach it?

Well I was thinking of buying and painting a lightish green 1998 ford explorer black because it looks terrible but I was wondering how much it would cost me here in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.
A: While I’ve never actually repainted a car, I was thinking about it awhile back and the price really seems to depend on where you go and what quality you want from my research.
For example, I seem to remember that a “cheap” place like Maaco (in the states, not sure of an Australia equiv) could cost as little as 200-300 or so USD. Their quality may not be that great though as I read quite a few people saying they did a terrible job, it faded quickly, it peeled off, etc… A higher quality shop though can easily run 500, 1,000, (again in USD) or more.
I don’t know if it’d be a 1:1 conversion for price, however the moral of the story (if you will) is that repainting a car isn’t cheap. For a car the size of a ford explorer, I would certainly error on the high side of things though. Most of what you pay for is taking apart and putting the car back together, and on a car like that it isn’t a “quick” process.

A: I owned a ‘98 Explorer that I bought in 2000. It had 18k miles when we bought it, and 85k when we sold it. We usually don’t keep a vehicle much past 90k miles.
It was a good, comfortable SUV that gave decent mpg, great in the snow, and I don’t think it ever left us stranded.
Ours had the 4.0 V6 that ran great, but we did have the timing chain replaced at about 30k miles, due to a strange noise. According to others, that was a rare problem.
We had an issue with the automatic 4WD transfer case shuddering under acceleration. The dealer changed all kinds of parts with no success, so I changed the fluid in the transfer case and fixed it for under $3.00. It was burned fluid, and the problem never came back.
After the string of vehicles we have owned since, I wish we had the old Explorer back. With proper maintenance and no abuse, it should go past 200k miles before any major repairs are required.

Okay, so I have a 1998 Ford Explorer 2 door V6 4×4.
Recently I have been hearing a noise coming from the engine, it is basically a howling or winding noise. The noise is coincides with the rpm’s, meaning if I am sitting at idle it’s quite, but what the rpm’s are up(speeding up) I hear the noise get louder.
Also, this really only happens when turning into a parking spot, I hear a loud almost grinding noise.
The truck seems to run fine, the steering wheel isn’t harder to turn or anything like that. I was told by a person or two they think my power steering pump is going up. The power steering fluid level has been fine for the past couple of weeks, holding steady. There does appear to be some sort of fluid leaking very slowly under the truck, not enough to drip and make a mark on the pavement, but the oil pan appears wet. I will check out exactly what the fluid is after work.
Any idea’s on what my problem is would be greatly appreciated. THANKS!
A: You might have to bleed it. turn full lock right hold and to the left hold .1 or 2 times.

I am looking to sell my truck because I cannot afford to drive it anymore.
1998 Ford Explorer. 220,000 miles, 4 wheel drive, heating/Air conditioning, chrome wheels, its in an overall decent condition.
I was broken into twice, leaving me with the front passenger window broken, the tiny window in the back passenger side, my front passneger side mirror, all broken. And my windshield is cracked. I will obviously fix these before selling it. But it will all be out of my pocket.

A: You need about $5k in parts and another $1k in labor. You didn’t say which V6 you had. The SOHC 4.0L will respond well to a blower. The older pushrod 4.0L will be marginal at best. If you have the older OHV V6, you’d do better swapping in a 5.0L V8.

A: Look at the mass airflow sensor, as well as your coolant temp. sensor. Goto autozone and borrow a code scanner, the new ones are able to let you watch the data coming from various sensors in a group. This the 6 banger or the 4.6L?
I first thought of carb. icing, but this should not be a problem with fuel injection.

A: if you havent had any fender benders lately, (pinched wire going to ground), check your light hookups under the rear bumper for a wire touching ground there, you have whats caled a dead short. shouldnt take long to locate it.

A: If the switches are in a pod in the foam padding like my Merc, just use a pocket knife and slowly worked the pod out of the foam. There were no other fasteners holding the pod in, just press fit into the foam.

A: Good chance its the transmission. if you still want to keep the explorer, you can take it to a good transmission /general mechanic shop and get it checked, tell them all the symptoms and see what they find, go to at least 3 shops. if they all say its the transmission that’s messed up, the job would take up to two 2 weeks. and atleast $3,000…if you don’t want to keep it, you can sell it to a junkyard and use that money for a down payment on another vehicle. If you keep driving the vehicle like this, you risk getting stuck on the freeway with an overheated engine, broke transmission, and the steering wheel will lock up…well first the vehicle slows down… I been there….

Hello Again. I guess I need to replace the door sensor switch on one of the four doors to my 1998 Ford Explorer. Please tell me how to do this.
A: Good luck with your exploder mate! they are really not nice to work with so ill give you a couple of pointers.
With the window down, take the door card off, you know the inside of the door, if you can’t do this i recommend you take this to someone who knows what there doing. look for screws, bolts, clips and so on. now power up the windows and disconnect switch. discard doorcard once inside, peel of the plastic to reveal your inner door!
remove the latch assy. there screws from the side, and be sure to remove all the linkages& remember where they go. disconnect plug if you can before you remove it.
the drivers side took me 45 min to fully dismantly and I wasn’t wasting time just being careful not to break anything!
Unless ofcourse you meant the courtesy switch, the one the turns the interior light on when you open the door, if thats the one, well its the thing that tuns the interior light off witrh the door opem ,ill be around the edge of the door, lift up the rubber boot to reveal the screw, remove, disconnect and replace!

A: Depends on what engine. Many Fords require alignment tools for timing, I have about $400 invested in them. A repair manual would be the best place to start.
