Q: Can I replace the serpentine belt tensioner on my 1998 Ford Explorer?
I posted a Q last night, but I have more info today! I have a 1998 Ford Explorer- 2 WD, V6 4.0 liter engine-keyless entry (they asked all that at the parts store). After some diagnostics, we believe the serpentine belt tensioner needs to be replaced but I can not find any info online as to whether this is a DIY type job. Can anyone help me (and my poor husband) on this? Is this an easy repair job?
Here was my original Q:
My car is making a high pitched whiny kinda squealing noise! When I left home, it
started this high pitched squeal….then stopped…drove about 60 miles…It sat for about two hours in a parking lot. On the way home, it started that noise
and never stopped…Just as I was turning into the subdivision, my radio quit and
my lights went real dim on my dash…the ABS light came on…pulled in the drive…
turned it off and waited a second, tried to turn it back on and it just clicked…dead
battery…
Thank you SO much for all the help last night and any today!
A: Ok so a belt tensioner is a fairly easy thing to replace on most all vehicles if you have the right tools. But to be honest from what you described unless the belt broke off its not the tensioner its the alternator. When the diodes in the alternator go bad they screw with everything in the car. Dash lights flicker, stereo goes in and out, and then the car dies as the battery finally goes dead from not getting a charge. If the tensioner needs to be replaced then I would do it too but dont think that will cure the problem completely. To replace the tensioner just take the belt off (make sure you remember how it goes back on) then remove the bolt in the center of it (not the one on the pulley itself, the one on the assembly) once you buy a new one and look at it you will realize just how easy it is to do. Just need a ratchet a socket and it make it a little easier to have a tool called a belt tensioner tool. It makes it easier to take the belt on and off because it is designed to release the tensioner and remove tension from the belt. Hope this helps. Good Luck!!! Feel free to email me or message me if you need any more help.

Q: Where is the oxygen sensor (Bank 2 Sensor 1) on a 1998 Ford Explorer?
I have a 1998 Ford Explorer 4.0L SOHC. The check engine light has been going off for a couple days and coming back on. I purchased am OBD II diagnostic tool and gave me the code P0153. Says the oxygen sensor has a slow response time. (Bank 2 Sensor 1). I have researched online and found completely different answers. One person said its on the driver side exhaust manifold the other person said passenger side on the exhaust manifold. I want to replace this myself, but want to replace the right one. Can someone please give me a descriptive answer to where it is. Maybe even give me a link with a picture of where it is located. They want to charge me $150 to change it, when I can get a new sensor for less than 40 bucks. Any help would be much appreciated!
A: Yes, it is pretty simple…..and yet……
The first thing to do is figure out which side of your engine it is that cylinder #1 is on. On all V-shaped engines, one cylinder head will be further forward than the other. The front cylinder on that side will be cylinder #1.
Bank 1 is always the same side as cylinder #1. Bank 2 is the other side. Sensor 1 is always the first one you’ll run into, either in the exhaust manifold, or soon thereafter in the head exhaust pipe.
Cylinder #1 on your engine is on the Passenger side, so Bank 2 is on the Driver (left hand on a left hand drive vehicle) side.

Theoretically, sensor 1 can be anywhere from in the Exhaust Manifold to just before the Catalytic Converter. In the case of a V-engine with a Y-pipe, before the junction of the 2 sides.
You may want to read through this article for some more background info and tips.

Q: 1998 Ford Explorer Power Window Switch, driver door?
I have a 98 EB Ford Explorer. The car wash folks got a little over zealous on cleaning the controls and broke/popped the control out on the drivers door, the central panel. Its there but hanging down and trying to slip down. It still works but its a pain.
I found a few junk yards online that sell the part, but I’m wondering can I replace that part by buying a new one and snapping it in (in the snap isn’t broke) or do I have to replace more than just the switch, like possibly door arm panel?
TIA
A: just change out the switch.
Q: Where can i find the transfer case tag number for my truck?
Im looking to locate the transfer case tag id for my 1998 Ford explorer sport truck without looking under the hood so that i can look up prices online?
A: side of the block or transfer!
Q: 245/35/ZR20 Tires on 98 Explorer Sport?
i found used rims and tires online and the guy said that the tire size is 245/35/ZR20 .. would that fit on my 1998 ford explorer sport?
the guy also said that the rims are a 5 lug universal and they came off a CTS… will a 5 lug universal fit EVERY 5 lug pattern?
A: the tire size should fit with no problems…..check the bolt pattern on the rims and make sure it matches up….yours should be 5 on 4.5″ or make sure they came off of another explorer or ranger or jeep, or something with 5 on 4.5…..the only problem you will have is bending rims….35 is a very low profile, they are like rubber bands wrapped around those rims so the rims will bend very easily if you hit a pothole or a steel plate or anything for that matter. in fact you should check to make sure they are not already bent or cracked.
