Q: Where can i get a used 1997 Ford Explorer V6 engine?
My 1997 Ford Explorer V6 engine shattered a piston and bent three con rods and valves. I need to replace it. Any ideas where i can order a good used engine from? alternatively i could rebuild it but i would need to buy the liner kit. Any ideas also where i can order the liner kit from. i would like to compare the costs of the alternatives.

A: junk yard

Q: We are considering buying a used Ford Explorer (1997-2000).?
For those who have owned one, please tell me what you like or dislike about them. What are some common problems?

A: i loved mine. when i hit a tree going about 35-40 both air bags activated. car was totaled but i was unhurt. the large hooded front was a blessing. its a good safe vehicle i think.

Q: What are some adjustments I can make to the engine of my 1997 Ford Explorer?
I have a 1997 Ford Explorer 5.0L V8 AWD. I want to make some adjustments to the engine to increase the power and horse power. I have heard of something the explorer has that is used in the mustang but the mustang one you have to buy and for the explorer, its already in there. I want an inexpensive way to increase horsepower and i Know i can for this car, but how? Thanks!

A: here are the simple and easiest improvement for your 5.0, first K&N air filter, more HP? go w/ K&N air induction, now you are breathing better, next get rid of the waste(exhaust) X pipe or dual exhaust, also dump the cats if your state does not require emission testing, then any high flow muffler, then the next step burn all that new fuel completely, larger plug wires, brass/copper distributor cap and a hotter coil (msd), the last thing would be a power chip for the computer, these are my simple mods i offer all the time!!

Q: 1997 Ford explorer clicking noise?
My 1997 ford explorer has a clicking noise when it is running. It runs great, has power, but just a clicking noise when it is running or you use more power. Any ideas?

A: The lifters are ticking, very very common on the V6 Ford. It’s nothing that’s going to cause the vehicle to stop functioning anytime soon but can be rather annoying.

For starters you can run engine flush through the block on the next oil change. Just follow the direction on the can of flush (around $4). Once the oil is out replace it with something a bit heavier. This will quiet or hush the lifters altogether for an unidentified amount of time (depends on how many miles are already on the vehicle).

Check your oil often! You are burning a bit of oil because of the sticky lifters. Your oil will degrade faster and need to be replenished in between oil changes.

Outside of major engine repair there’s not much you can do. You’re looking at $700 – $1200 to replace the lifters.

Now, when you hear the tick start to get louder (many miles down the road) you’ll need to break down and get it repaired or buy a new vehicle. If a lifter sticks completely you can bend rods/screw up the heads pretty bad. Most 4.0 Ford V6’s will run with this tick for another 70 – 100k miles with no major trouble.

Hope this helps!

Q: What motors would be compatable in my 1997 Ford Explorer?
The current motor is a 4.0L SOHC V6 and it’s got a 4WD transmission. Are there any other year models, or Ford motors that I could use.

A: the pushrod 5.0 V8 was a option that year, so it should work.. at least I hope so, because that’s what I want to put in mine..

You could also use the 3.8, 4.0 and 4.2 pushrod series since they are all the basic same engine..

Q: What kind of stereo can i get for my 1997 Ford Explorer?
I don’t like my current stock in-dash stereo. I want to upgrade, but I have no idea wheere to begin. The slot where it fits seems much larger than the size of the stereos i see when i look for some online. Is there a compatibility number i can use to search with? Can anyone recommend a good product for my ‘97 Ford Explorer, or even a good website to buy one. Please don’t just leave a website, please only respond if you can answer my original question. Thank You!

A: you can get any stereo. Custom stereos all are smaller, so they fit. With all of them, you have to get an installation mounting kit thing and wireing harness also. It’s not as complicated as it sounds. You can get these things at Walmart and many other places.

Q: How much for a new engine in a 1997 ford explorer xlt, v6?
Anybody in the auto industry that can answer this for me? i found a real good deal on a used suv by my house, but it needs a new engine probably.

A: go find a junk motor for about 1.500.00…pull it out of another explorer, that has LOW MILEAGE (about 40-50.000 miles)…..go to a junk dealer.

Q: Does anyone know how to turn off the interior lights in a 1997 Ford Explorer XLT while the doors are open?
I have an overhead dome in the front seat where switches can be used to turn these off (I think these may be also associated with my headlights which I can turn off). However I have a rear dome light with no switch on it that will not turn off when the rear door or window hatch is open. My friends and I go to the drive in occasionally and my car is ideal to use because of the size, but people get pretty pissed off if you’re in front of them with your interiors on. Let me know if anyone knows the answer. I have been looking online and have not had any luck. Could not find my car manual either. Thanks: )

A: I had the same problem — you have to remove the bulb (The cover should just pop off and you can leave it off). Don’t remove the fuse, because that thing is for alot more than the dome lights. Hope this helps!

Q: How can i tell if my 1997 Ford explorer has the Factory Premium sound system Installed?
I need to figure this out so i can purchase a wiring harness for a aftermarket head unit. If i don’t have the premium sound then i need to buy a $27 harness instead of using the free one.

A: The issue with Ford Explorer’s from that time period are that there are roughly three different radio systems that I can think of off the top of my head. Simple way to tell is if you have a factory subwoofer, or the Eddie Bauer edition. If you have either one of these, then it’ll be premium sound.

Q: Rebuilt Transmission for a 1997 Ford Explorer XLT 6Cyl Cost?
I need a new transmission for the vehicle above. I was thinking about getting it used/rebuilt. How much (estimate) money should I expect to pay for one. Also, it has 4 wheel drive, so would that make the transmission cost more expensive? Thanks very much.

A: Usually the tranny will be a little more expensive for the 4×4 because you need an extra mount on it for the front drive shaft. and it should be around 1500 for a rebuilt tranny. Hope you find what you need.

Q: My 1997 Ford Exploder (explorer) is a P.O.S.?
I have a 1997 ford explorer 4.0 OHV and it idles funny and i went and got it inspected and the mechanic said it was my EGR valve so i replace it and the EGR vavle pressure sensor and it still idleing funny. And even if i slam on the gas it doesnt accelerate as fast as it used to.. I mean its really slow…please help!!!!!!

A: It’s also an S.U.V. (stupid useless vehicle). I’m sorry, I couldn’t resist.

Q: 1997 ford explorer, will I be able to keep the factory cd changer?
If i replace the head unit, can i still use the cd changer? It’s in the center console with a disc magazine (if that makes any difference)

A: Not likely. The connections to the OEM head unit will not mate to anything on the market. Also, the signal codes for the CD unit will be different. The builders of the electronics do this on purpose. You could try Crutchfield.com and see if there’s anything. If they don’t have it, it’s not made by anybody.

Q: 1997 ford explorer??
how do you take the child safety locks off a 1997 ford explorer I cannot check the manual because I bought it used and it did not come with a manual please let me know.

A: Open the door. On the latch side of the door there will be a small lever. Move this lever either up or down (can’t remember which way). When this does not work replace the interior door handle. Explorers have a plastic gear on the handle which is prone to stripping, making the door able to be opened from the outside but not inside. This is an easy fix. Parts run about $25, takes about 10 min to replace.

Q: Which used transmissions will work with my 1998 Ford Explorer?
1998 Ford Explorer XLT automatic transmission is slipping going into third gear. Which years will still fit? I recall the 1997 and 1998 Explorer tranny is the same. What about Ford Ranger?

A: there should be a service tag on the side of trans. but i would be careful of switching between years of vehicles, they change the electronics from year to year usually and from vehicle to vehicle. best bet is to build the 1 you got.
