Q: Should I buy a 1997 Ford Explorer?
I am thinking of buying a 1997 Ford Explorer. It looks to be in great shape. Here is some info:
46,000 Miles (very low)
5.0L V8
Leather seats
Sunroof
looks to be in great shape, body looks like it is in great condition.

The asking price was $7000. Since any dealer is just looking to sell, sell, sell, during this time period, I worked the price down to $4500. Is this a good deal? Will I have problems or will it be a great SUV. Thanks!

A: I have a 97 Explorer, 5.0, V8, leather seats, ETC. And I also paid about $4500 for it, about 2 yrs ago.
CONS: It is a major gas guzzler. I have had a lot of problems with it (new alternator, radiator problems…)

PRO: That SUV is a freaking tank. Two weeks ago I was sitting at a red light and was rear ended by a car going 25 mph, which shoved my SUV into the SUV in front of me, so I was sandwiched in between. The only thing that happened was a bent bumper. That’s just one out of MANY stories, but the Explorer hasn’t failed me yet.

On the other hand, I will never buy one again. I get only about 10-12 miles a gallon.

Q: How is the engine in a 1997 Ford Explorer?
I am going to buy a 1997 Ford Explorer with 51,000 miles on it. It has a V8 AWD engine. How is the pick up in this car. How much horsepower does it have. It is a truck engine so I am thinking it must be powerful. Also, how does it compare to the V6 engine. Thanks!
It is a 5.0L V8.

A: aaaahhhhh the v8 all wheel drive ford explorer. nice all wheel drive system on them, viscous coupling drive the same as the subaru’s i believe. well, you’re looking at a triton 4.6 liter v8 with about 215 horsepower AT THE WHEELS, or should i say split between all 4 wheels. This is a nice power plant compared to the 4.0 liter v6 which on a good day pounds out 177 to 182 horses at the wheels. This should shave a little time off your 0 to 60 total. I was decently impressed with the v6 performance in the two door explorers (moderately quick and responsive), so i can imagine the v8 in the 4 door AWD model would be quite quicker.

Q: Should I buy a 1997 Ford Explorer?
I am thinking of buying this for my son as his first car. It has 144,000 miles, but is in excellent condition. The price is 1,700 and Kelly Blue Book said it was worth over 2,000. Also, how long do they last, years/miles? Its a 4D. Thanks!

A: I have had Explorers for the last 12 years. My 91 Eddie I sold with its original engine, transmission and transfer case at around 200,000 miles. It was excellent. (I bought it with 100,000 miles on it)

My present 98 XLT is on its second engine as first was trashed by Jiffy Lube, but still has original trans and trans case. It has 205,000 miles on it and I love it.

If price is US$1,700 then I would say its a bargain. Especially at 144,000 miles.

Good luck with it.

Q: Does the 1997 Ford Explorer have shoulder-belt style seat belts in the backseats?
We are looking at buying a 1997 Ford Explorer and have two children in booster seats. We just want to be sure that they are secured properly.

A: I believe that they do but if you have the VIN number just call the vehicles manufacturer and ask them.

Q: Should I buy a 1997 Ford Explorer? Read for details?
It has no damage or problems.
It has leather, driver and passenger heated seats, driver/passenger power seats, message center, console with thermometer, 4WD,
Best part is it has only 51,000 miles!!!
Is it worth buying for around 3800.

V8 .

A: no they don’t have roll over problems, ford this year upgraded there suspension so it takes a lot to over turn these. i just bought a 97 ford explorer all wheel drive v8 and only paid 2195 for it but has 162,000 miles so what you are paying sounds like a very good deal. i looked on kbb and it says they are worth 3000 with my mileage so take it for a test drive and if you dont notice any problem i would say it is a good buy.

Q: How powerful is a 5.0L V8 engine in a 1997 Ford Explorer?
I am buying a 1997 Ford Explorer tomorrow and I want to know how powerful the engine is. It is a 5.0L V8. How is the pick-up/acceleration? Will it be good on the highways if I need to pass someone up. Thanks!

A: well the mountaineers and ford explorers came with the ford gt40p heads. this makes mustang lovers cringe because mustangs didn’t come with them. they are a common upgrade from the H.O.heads that mustangs come with. That, along with the HO intake that it comes with, i believe it is rated at around 240hp stock which is about 20hp more than the 90s mustangs tha have the same motor..the 4.0 liter was just fine for it and that 5.0 is really an overkill, but it will tow pretty hefty boats and trailers (with some helper springs) if your into that. hope this helps.

A: Its a great engine and has everything that you want except the gas mileage plus the repair costs will be very expensive…

Q: What sound system should I buy for my Ford Explorer?
I have a 1997 Ford Explorer and I want to buy a sound system with loud bass and everything. What can I buy without going overboard on the price. I also don’t want to change the dashoard and I do have a 6 disc changer inside the center arm rest console. Would I be able to put the controller there? Thanks!

A: how loud u want to go?
4 ch. amp to power 2 new front speakers (or use 1 channel of the amp) and a sub in a slim box made for trucks… wedge box ported and tuned to your sub. go with a 10 at least.

Q: I am thinking about buying a 1997 ford explorer for about 900$, is it a good deal?
I dont know any of the particulars on the car, but i was wondering if anyone had past history with the car or information that would be helpful before i make my decision.

A: Well, when gas prices rise, you aren’t going to be happy with it.

Also, assuming the vehicle is in good condition, even a bare bones explorer with 2 doors, manual transmission, and no standard equipment goes for $1,725 according to the Kelley Blue Book.

Q: 1997 & 2000 Ford Explorer has a funny sound from under the front end, not the engine compartment. What is it?
MY son has a 2000 Ford Explorer & I have a 1997 Ford Explorer (altho mine if 11 years old, only has 80,000 miles) I noticed his car made a funny sound, like wub-wub-wub coming out from under his car and he said it is probably a tire of balancing, or alignment. Well I just bought a 1997 Ford Explorer and low and behold, I have the same funny sound – wub-wub-wub. I took it in for a complete check-up, oil change, serpentine belt, radiator flush, and 4 NEW COOPER TIRES, complete with balancing. I told the garage that the sound was there and he said he could find nothing to pin it on altho I don’t think it is as pronounced and before. What could be causing this sound. I drive with my ears as well as my eyes, nose, taste, and feel. Could this sound be caused by that protective cover just beside the wheel – it seems to be a cover to keep mud and debris from getting at the other components of the undercarraige. PULLLeeeezzze – Somebody tell me what is causing the wub-wub-wub sound. Thanks

A: It might be a piece of plastic flapping or something. It is probably wind noise. An explorer has the aerodynamic properties of a fridge.

“I drive with my ears as well as my eyes, nose, taste, and feel”

Remember, keep your hands on the wheel, your feet on the peddles, your eyes on the road … and don’t sniff or lick the tailpipe anymore. People are starting to wonder about you.

Q: How much is a 1997 Ford Explorer worth?
I’m looking to buy a Ford Explorer. Has 176,000km’s and seems to be in great condition.

A: www.bluebook.com

Hope this helps!!

Q: My first car is a 1997 Ford Explorer … what can i do to make it look good? ?
hey..

i bought a 1997 ford explorer (exploder as some like to call it…?) and i need some feedback of what i should do to make it look good…

its a limited so its leather inside…
sunroof and all that….

any suggestion? :)

(dont want to here about how bad of a car it is.. please…i have heard it all…keep it to yourself)

A: you can find lots of stuff for it on ebay.com like running lights and chrome grills. I lowered mine by backing off the torsion bars in front and removing some spacers in the back..

Q: Where can I go and buy and get installed shocks and struts for a 1997 Ford Explorer XLT for a good price?
In the Dallas,Texas area.(OakCliff)

A: The yellow pages is loaded with service garages and dealers–find a good shop close to home–get friendly with them–you will always need that shop for regular maintenance–oil and filters and tire rotations–it is nice to have a nearby shop to depend on. Talk nice and they will always be good to you.

Q: 1997 Ford Explorer ANSWER ASAP?
im considering to buy a 1997 Ford Explorer 4.0 V-6 with AOD and 97 mileage so id like to know your experience or hear anything about this truck? will it cost me a lot of gas? is it a bad truck to have? would i be happy to buy this truck? i don’t want to be regretting to buy this truck!

A: I own one too, but you don’t say which 4.0 it has… there were 2, the ohv and the SOHC, THE OHV lacks power, where the SOHC has over 200 hp and is very peppy, this is the one I have and I like it very well…the only problem with it is the cam tensioners, they get loose and causes a rattling that sounds like a bad cat or a diesel motor.. they are very expensive to get fixed and have to be taken to the dealer and have the engine pulled, so usually they just install a new motor..

it will keep up with the V8’s and get 20 on the road and 15 city and that’s with 175,000 miles on it…it did better when new..

Hope this has been of some value..

Q: What are some adjustments I can make to the engine of my 1997 Ford Explorer?
I have a 1997 Ford Explorer 5.0L V8 AWD. I want to make some adjustments to the engine to increase the power and horse power. I have heard of something the explorer has that is used in the mustang but the mustang one you have to buy and for the explorer, its already in there. I want an inexpensive way to increase horsepower and i Know i can for this car, but how? Thanks!

A: here are the simple and easiest improvement for your 5.0, first K&N air filter, more HP? go w/ K&N air induction, now you are breathing better, next get rid of the waste(exhaust) X pipe or dual exhaust, also dump the cats if your state does not require emission testing, then any high flow muffler, then the next step burn all that new fuel completely, larger plug wires, brass/copper distributor cap and a hotter coil (msd), the last thing would be a power chip for the computer, these are my simple mods i offer all the time!!
