Q: 1994 Ford Explorer – repair or buy new(er) car?
I have a 1994 Ford Explorer bought used 5 years ago, in the past 12 mos I’ve spent over 2500 in repairs, otherwise great car and my dog loves the back for herself. Now, I need radiator work and if the sealant doen’t work a intake head gasket. Ford people, Should I look into continue repair or look into something new or used?
Car has 106K was 55K when I bought it Oct 03. Just found out the place who did my radiator flush July 07, did not hook up the overflow/resevoir hose to the right place. My new mechanic has placed a sealer in the intake gastic and we are hoping it works. Would rather save for hard times than buy a car…..
But will do what is necessary to get to work and back. Public trans isn’t an option, here it leave at 5 to be a work at 7 but is only 6 miles.

A: Reallistically it depends on the mechanic and how far you want to continue to invest in your vehicle. Your describing a common problem that happens to the 4.0 motors whn they reach that age. Your vehicle is almost 15 years old. Corrosion and wear will only continue to create further problems. If you can perform some repairs as a dyi then long term may not be too bad. If you are having to take everything to a shop, hen you can probrably expect more repairs down the road. If your pushing over 150 thousand on mileage and can afford a new investment I say save yourself some headaches and go for something better. Good Luck!

Q: 1994 ford explorer passenger side door will not open with key?
I just bought a 1994 ford explorer from my neighbor. It runs great but as with any used car there are a few “issues.” I noticed today, the passenger side door does not open with a key. It goes in, turns, but does nothing. I can open the door once I unlock it with the power locks, from inside and out. I am guessing I need a new mechanism for it, how much does it cost to have these installed, or is there any way to get it working otherwise?

A: you might need a new latch.but first Pull the door panel and see if you do not have any lose parts in the latch area.

Q: what size battery do i buy for a 1994 ford explorer and do i need to buy new cables?

Q: Would a 1997 Ford Explorer Transmission Fit In A 1994 Ford Explorer?
I am looking into buying a 1994 ford explorer and it needs a transmission and i found a 1997 ford explorer transmission, would it fit the 1994?

A: No. The 1994 has a A4LD transmission. The 1997 has a 5R55E or 4R70W trans depending on which engine it has. Both are computer controlled. The computer in the 1994 would not work with either trans.

Q: HELP…when I brake my car pulls to the left (1994 Ford Explorer)?
I just bought this 1994 Ford Explorer. When I brake it pulls hard to the left, any ideas of what it possibly is before I take it in to have it looked at?

A: If pulling hard to the left, then a brake component on the right side is not working properly, causing all of the work to be done by the left. When dealing with the brake system, I would definately want to have it looked at by a professional.

Q: 1994 Ford explorer squeaking noise?
My parents bought me a 1994 ford explorer with 49,000 Miles on it, but whenever I bress the breaks the squeak is really loud…and when I turn the car to the right there is a sqeak, but its not as lound at all….I know its not the brakes because I just had them changed….any ideas?
I just F’ed up so many words…sorry…
Its like a squeak/crunching noise
And we bought a warrany for it so tell me what you think could be wrong so I could go into the place with some ideas.
No, we really bought it with 49,000 miles on it…we bought it in a small town that my grandma lives in at an auto dealership and it belonged to one of my grandmas friends that only used it for work (rent-a-cop)

A: When it comes to cars, a lot of things could be worng. If you have had the break pads checked and it’s not that, it could be that it needs aligned, maybe the break pad is slipping, shocks, spark plugs, I mean my mom’s van used to do that and when we took it in they told us it needed new break pads. That could be something you might want to look into more.

Q: What years/models did the Ford Explorer get nicknamed exploder?
I’m buying a 1994 Ford Explorer, 4 door. I’m a little paranoid, so, can someone tell me what years/models the Ford Exploreres were “exploders”?

A: In 1994 they had a reputation to roll over easy because of the extra 600 pounds added and higher ground clearance but most of the time it was because unsafe driving. Then came the exploding Firestone tires, here Firestone and ford blamed eachother. But it was Firestone that had defective tires, the tires exploded or caught fire. Ford also had explorer’s with goodyear tires and nothing happen with them. If this explorer doesn’t have Firestone tires, and everthing is in good condition then you should be alright. – try taking it to get checked by a mechanic before you buy it.

Q: I have a 1994 Ford Explorer I broke my Driver Seat. Where could I buy a new driver seat?

A: If it’s broken at the pivot to recline, it usually can be repaired. Since she’s a ‘94, chances are good you can find one at a local scrap yard.

Q: How long will my 1994 Ford Explorer last?
I bought my Explorer in 2007 and now it has about 202,000 miles with the original engine and transmission. How long do you think it will go? I change the oil about every 3,500 miles and keep the air filter clean. It starts every time, has never died, and transmission has never slipped. If you owned one, how long did it last? Thanks!

A: They should last a while if you take care of it. My dad has a F150 (virtually the same vehicle as your Explorer) that has nearly 350,000 miles on it. Sounds like you know to take care of the preventative maintenance, you should be good to go for a while yet.

Q: 1994 Ford Explorer won’t start?
I have a 1994 Ford Explorer i just bought it a few week ago i starts up fine most of the tim and runs great everything seem fine except out of no where randomly it just wont start and i have to wait anywhere from 5min to a day before it will start again i took it to a mechanic and it started for him every time he tested it on a machine and it said their was nothing wrong with it and he couldn’t find anything wrong with it idk what to do it seems to not start when i need to go somewhere
When i try to start it it turns over but doesn’t start

A: I’d spray some starter fluid in the carburetor when it doesn’t start. See what kind of response you get. You could need to replace the fuel filter or spark plugs/ wires or carburetor or a battery cable is corroded (at the battery or at the starter). It could be lots of things. The starter fluid should get it to start. Good luck.

Maybe it floods easy. I never put my foot on the gas pedal when starting a car. You should try that.

Or next, try mashing the pedal 10-15 times before starting it. Maybe the gas line goes dry; I dunno though.

Q: Is 145k good gas mileage for a 1994 Ford Explorer 4WD?
I’m looking to buy a car and found this car, but I’m not sure if the gas mileage is good.

A: Yes, You should be able to get 200.000 to 250,000 as long as it has had regular maintenance.

Q: 1994 Ford Explorer good family car?
*********************POINTS TO BEST ANSWER*************************
I only have $1000.00 to buy a car but i would like to know based on quality if a ‘94 Ford Explorer would be a good choice. The guy tells me they re-did the engine a while ago, what does that mean? is this a trustworthy vehicle? What should i look for or pay attention to in terms of damage? Please your answers are appreciated.

A: any 1994 you buy will be a risk. you are coming into a 16 year old car and anything could break at anytime. Is it a good car??? it was when in first came out but i am not sure about now. a re-done engine can mean a lot. Test drive it, and listen to it. Don’t have the engine on, just drive and listen. I would personally pass on it, but with only $1,000, it might be a good deal for you

Q: 1994 Ford Explorer, 4WD doesn’t lock in…?
I bought the explorer this summer, knowing the 4wd wasn’t working. The guy told me the front hubs needed replacing, but I want to make sure that the hubs are actually the problem before I go spending any money on them.

Just to be sure 4×4 wasn’t working, I took the truck out to a gravel parking lot, and from a full stop, I cut the wheels hard right, and watched to see if they spun when I punched the gas. The back wheels spun out, but not the front. So… no 4×4 for sure.

The truck has push buttons on the dash to engage 4×4 and for low gear. When I push for low gear, nothing happens. When I push the 4×4 button, the light does comes on in the dash, but it’s not actually engaged.

I’m thinking the problem must be something more than just the hubs. They could be bad, but, even if they are, there’s something else that would have to explain low gear not working either. So, could the problem be faulty wiring or a faulty button? Except, the light comes on, so the button did “something”… Could be a problem in the transfer case, how would I check that my transfer case is/isn’t doing it’s job?

A: This is a lot easier than you think. Im dissappointed in the yahoo answers community for not knowing this. There are three common problems that go wrong on the first and second generation Explorers. First and the reason you were told this is the hubs. Hubs is what most people who dont know any other 4X4 components will say because its all they know of. While i have seen it be a problem this is not your exact problem. If im wrong about this i will never answer another Q & A on yahoo again.
The actual problem on your 1st gen. Exploder(yea, Exploder) is on your transfer case with a six or seven wire plug going into it called either by some a 4X4 shift actuator or shift motor. You can do a crude prelim test on this by doing it the old fashion way and bang on it(not too hard with a rubber mallet) while trying to engauge with another person on top side. While on the bottom if it clicks in you will hear it and the first one will be a thud because its been so long. It will get smoother when you replace this component because at that point you know whats wrong. Not near as hard and not near as expensive to do as the hubs. The other reason i know its not the hubs is because you would hear a high pitch clicking or whining in the hubs which you did not explain so i assume if you heard this you would say something. Ive been doing this for 29 years now and this is the most common of the 4X4 probs on the 93-2000 explorers and i have replaced dozens over the last few winters alone in our garage. I will bet my entire yahoo answers existence on it.
